Booth feasted on his order of steak and eggs while Brennan twisted her fork idly around in her bowl of fruit.

"I've never felt this way before, Booth."

It was his turn to poke at his food. "I know."

"I was beginning to enjoy it while Sully was here," she continued. "I'm not enjoying it anymore."

He heard the hoarseness of her voice on the last sentence and looked up. Her nose was red, her lips quivering. There were tears poised to fall.

Crap. Thanks a lot, Sul. You promised me you wouldn't hurt her. You'd better hope we never cross paths again. He reached across the table to take her hand in his.

"I'm sorry, Temperance. Really, I am. If I'd known he was going to take off like that...." He shook his head, knowing talking Sully down wasn't the way to go right now. "I'm just sorry you're hurting. I want you to know I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere." He squeezed her hand. "Hey. Look at me." When he had her eyes, he continued. "I know you think everyone you care about has and always will leave you. I want you to know that I never, ever will...because I care about you, too."

He knew he'd said the right thing when the tears she had so resolutely held back fell free.
